The ex-king finally came in by a small side door close to the main entrance. That meant he had to push past dozens of those assembled, only increasing their sense of feverish expectation.
He did not look like someone battered and bruised or a man many say was single-handedly responsible for the end of a centuries-old monarchy.
Once he started speaking, the sound system failed – a comical reminder of Maoist leader Prachanda’s first press conference two years ago, when the lights went out.
Gyanendra’s words were barely audible to most, then there were violent sounds of electronic feedback before his voice momentarily boomed louder, then went back to being soft again.

Most analysts agree that the Maoists have little chance of doing this through competitive politics. They have lost much of their influence in the countryside, and are unpopular in the cities.
In the meantime they will try to pressure other parties to agree to their demands for the immediate ending of the monarchy and for the CA polls to be held under a fully proportional voting system.
They have also shown an ability to outwit their opponents in a way that erodes the authority of much of the state.
It was the failure of the democratic parties, the king, the army and other security agencies which made the Maoists’ journey to the capital possible in the first place.
Now they have reached a point where they seem able to put a break on a national objective like holding elections, something that virtually the entire country had agreed on.
This, many say, has severely weakened the public’s confidence in its legitimate institutions.

In many villages they forcibly recruited a member of each family, and to build a showcase road project in the remote west, they used temporary forced labour.
And yet the Maoists’ promise of a better society – which was, after all, the reason they went to war – has caught the public’s imagination.
Nepalis do seem to have faith in the democratic process. The new assembly will have a two-year term and some voters have said they will kick the Maoists out of government if they disappoint.
Prachanda’s reaction to initial Maoist successes was perhaps his most conciliatory speech yet, promising cooperation both at home and abroad.
There are also hopes that this unexpected emerging result could mean more stability and therefore more investment, domestic and foreign, which has long eluded the country.
Going by current trends, the Maoists will have a lot of power, both in running the government and rewriting the constitution. The other main parties have been decimated.

Partial results from Afghanistan’s presidential election show incumbent Hamid Karzai has extended his lead.
With three quarters of votes counted, Mr Karzai had 48.6%, followed by Abdullah Abdullah with 31.7%.
Both have claimed victory after the 20 August poll, which has been marred by fraud allegations.
Some results have been annulled due to irregularities, officials said. The winner needs to secure an outright majority of 50% to avoid a run-off.
Independent Election Commission (IEC) official Daud Ali Najafi said results from 447 of about 28,000 polling stations had been annulled, following fraud investigations.

Michael Jackson’s unique blend of soul, funk and rock made him the biggest pop act in the world.
Beyond this, his business acumen and intuitive understanding of the music market allowed him to showcase his remarkable talents.
Michael Jackson sold records by the million – and broke records too.
With the soulful vocal presence of Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder and the dance moves of James Brown, Jackson’s appeal crossed both national and racial boundaries.
His first break came in 1968, when the Jackson Five signed to the Motown label, and he was just 11 when the group released its first single.

Visualising your digestive system as a river may not seem the most obvious way of treating an illness.
But that is exactly how hypnotherapists at a unique centre in Withington Hospital, Manchester, have been helping people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
The condition can leave people in constant discomfort and can cause severe pain.
And it can prevent them from working or socialising normally.
Dr Peter Whorwell, the gastroenterologist who founded the centre, devised the “river” concept.
The aim is to make the river flow smoothly. If there is a blockage or a flood, they are asked to visualise a way the problem can be solved.

A Department of Health survey has shown that many of us drink far above the recommended limits when on our summer holiday.
Like many of us, 27-year-old Andy Graves was guilty of overindulging on his week-long break in Devon this year, but now says he is aiming for a healthier September.
“It was a family holiday with two families getting together and it tends to orientate around drinking and relaxing.
“We were in a large country house and on a typical day we would have a big lunch which would involve drinking and sometimes going to the pub in the afternoon.
“In the evenings we would get together for a large dinner where there would be lots of wine and the younger ones would stay up into the night drinking and playing games.”

Iran could face new sanctions if it does not show a willingness to negotiate on its nuclear programme, the German chancellor has said.
Angela Merkel was speaking after talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Berlin.
She also called on Israel to freeze its settlement construction for the sake of progress in peace talks.
In London on Wednesday, Mr Netanyahu suggested Israel was close to an agreement on settlements.
During his visit to Germany, the Israeli prime minister has also been given original blueprints of the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz
